Designing for the World Cup: 6 Ways to Elevate a Sporting Event

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Kansas City is preparing for more than just matches, it’s preparing to welcome the world.

While reading through the KC2026 Community Playbook, one thing became clear: This is a moment for Kansas City businesses, brands, and creatives to help shape a “welcoming, distinctly Kansas City experience.”

But what does that actually look like in practice?

It’s not always about themed décor or overt sports references. It’s about creating spaces that feel elevated, intentional, and rooted in hospitality.

The KC2026 playbook emphasizes creating environments where visitors feel welcomed, seen, and celebrated.

That’s not decoration, it’s experience design.

And florals, when used thoughtfully, become one of the most powerful tools to achieve that.

1. Designing the Welcome Moment

First impressions matter more than ever during a global event.

Think beyond centerpieces and focus on entry-driven design. Here’s a Floraloom example from a KC Royals Event:

  • Sculptural floral installations in lobbies or entryways

  • Statement arrangements on bars or welcome tables that anchor the space

  • Layered textures that create warmth and depth

Whether it’s a corporate office, stadium, or private event, your entry becomes your introduction, not just to your brand, but to the city itself.

Your space is your handshake with the world.

2. Reference the Game, Don’t Recreate It

It’s tempting to go literal with team colors and logos. But I think there is a more organic approach that can incorporate a team’s favorite colors while also elevating the design. It’s all about layering in textures and supporting colors that may not be in the specific team’s color palette.

Think:

  • Subtle nods to team color, using modern color-blocking instead of full saturation or a polka-dot look of mixed colors. Many teams have such vibrant contrasting colors that it can clash if both are put in the same floral arrangements. Separating the colors can feel more refined.

  • Shapes and structures inspired by the sport

  • Materials that echo the feeling of the game rather than the visuals

This keeps the design feeling refined.

For example, here are centerpieces and a bar piece I designed for Sporting Kansas City. It incorporated their branded colors in a more restrained, layered way, and structural way, allowing it to feel elevated rather than expected.

3. Design for How People Gather

Sporting events are inherently social, but good design makes that interaction feel natural.

Instead of designing around the screen alone, consider:

  • Lounge-style seating that encourages conversation

  • Groupings that allow for both watching and mingling

  • Floral elements integrated into spaces add in organic elements and help break up the media moments, making everything feel elevated.

4. Blending Global Influence with Local Identity

The World Cup brings together cultures from across the globe, and Kansas City has the opportunity to respond in kind.

Instead of literal interpretations (flags, color blocking), consider:

  • Floral palettes inspired by international regions

  • Design styles that reference global aesthetics in subtle ways

  • Materials and textures that feel layered and intentional

5. Expressing Kansas City

The KC2026 playbook emphasizes the importance of creating something distinctly Kansas City.

The challenge is doing that without becoming overly literal.

Instead, look to:

  • Architectural lines and structural forms

  • Native or regional materials like grasses and textural foliage

  • Subtle nods to local color palettes, such as those associated with Sporting Kansas City

The result is a design language that feels grounded, elevated, and authentic, something visitors won’t find anywhere else.

6. Rethinking Scale: Small Activations, Big Impact

Not every brand will host a large-scale event—and they don’t need to.

The playbook encourages participation at every level, opening the door for smaller, high-impact activations:

  • Weekly floral moments in office spaces

  • Styled bar or hospitality areas

  • Entry table installations refreshed throughout the tournament

These micro-installations create consistency, visibility, and relevance over time.

For many brands, they’re the most strategic way to stay engaged throughout the World Cup season.

Elevating Sporting Design

Elevated sporting event design isn’t about removing the energy or excitement, it’s about refining it.

It’s about creating spaces that feel just as considered as any other event, while still honoring the reason people are there in the first place.

And the brands that approach it with intention will be the ones people remember.
